New technology is bringing wonders to the eyes every day. Even resurrecting someone from the past is now no longer a figment of imagination but instead a reality for the new Star Wars prequel, which is set 40 years before Star Wars the Force Awakens.
To all the force filled fans out there, Rogue One will hit the big screens in December 2016. It was revealed, with the assistance of CGI, by Peter Cushing who played the evil Grand Moff Tarkin, commander of the Death Star who will ‘come back to life’ in the prequel.
However there is one major issue the franchise faces. Cushing, who died in 1994, reportedly wore slippers on set due to the uncomfortable footwear he was originally provided with. He was therefore only shot from the ankles up, and regrettably no Star Wars footage exists of his actual feet.
It has been noted it will be one of the “most complex and costly CGI re-creations ever.” Cushing plays a vital role in the plot as he was the one to create Darth Vader and the film will explore the whole back story to Darth Vader and his relationship with the dark side.
Of course this isn’t the only example we have heard of using CGI in films to re-create people. After Paul Walker’s tragic passing, the producers of Fast and Furious 7 helped recreate him through using a body double and CGI.
The technology providers behind this fascinating CGI work are powering the film industry now more than ever before. Current computer generated imagery is allowing for a cost effective alternative to set photography/filming, which is helping to eliminate set builds, props and the need for multiple camera angles.
The CGI industry is growing and is vastly increasing the stakes with every passing film testing the boundaries and leaping forward with new developments. Films such as: Avatar, Inception, Life of Pi and Gravity all received awards for their expert levels of CGI.
