Keeping Up With The Oaksers – Daniel Bailey, Digital Account Lead

Keeping up with the Oaksers - Blog Header

Who are you? And what’s your job at Whiteoaks?
My name’s Daniel Bailey, or Dan… Internally I get called Digital Dan but feel free to shorten that to DD! I’m the Digital Account Lead here at Whiteoaks… my job involves A LOT of social media.

What does your daily to-do list look like?
My days are pretty varied to be honest, no two days are the same. Anything from community management to monitoring for engagement opportunities and dealing with online influencers. I’m also regularly providing support on client social media strategy to ensure we’re seeing strong results. I’ll also dabble with designing some graphics when I can find a bit of spare time in my schedule. Another key part of my role is to keep team morale high by cracking a vast number of jokes and puns on a daily basis… they love it.

What made you want to get into PR?
It was more the idea of working with social media that enticed me into the world of PR. I started as a Digital PR Apprentice here at Whiteoaks with quite a limited knowledge of what PR actually was! But that was almost five years ago so it’s safe to say that I’m now hooked on PR and marketing.

Who is your favourite brand and why?
I guess it’s an obvious one considering I own so many of their polo shirts, but Fred Perry is my favourite brand. I’ve always been a fan of the company’s image and how it has maintained itself over the last 60 years. Its signature twin-tipped polo shirt has been a part of countless subcultures and movements since its humble beginnings on a tennis court.

What’s your top tip for someone who wants to get into the PR industry?
Don’t be afraid to get stuck in. Be friendly and approachable, try to help other people… The more you’ll build up your base of contacts, the better. PR is a small world so having friends in lots of different places will benefit you more than you might think. Another little tip is to read a lot; it will help you to communicate with others, which is key in the world of PR.

How do you unwind after a day in the office?
Music is always my go-to way to relax and chill. I’ve always got headphones on whilst trying to find some new music to listen to. I guess a cheeky pint or two might also help as the weekend approaches. There’s nothing better than sitting in a pub garden when the sun’s out with a cold beer.

What’s your favourite anthem suggestion for Friday’s Whiteoaks Power Hour?
It has to be Craig David – Rewind. His first album, Born To Do It, was the first CD I received for my Walkman. I don’t think I would ever get bored of it!

If you could be any character in any film, what would you be?
This is a tough one… The first character that comes to mind is Forrest Gump. Forget that he’s not the sharpest tool in the box because everyone can take a page out of his book when it comes to his attitude to life. He makes his own luck and always manages to come out on top out of whatever weird or wonderful situation he finds himself in. Plus, who else is able to run across the width of the United States multiple times whilst rocking such a glorious beard in the process?

What’s your ideal getaway location?
Send me to the States. Somewhere with amazing views and nature, such as Yosemite, the Grand Tetons or the Grand Canyon. The US might be known for its unhealthy food but its National Parks are second-to-none. If you haven’t been to one then I’d recommend booking a flight, pitching a tent and donning your hiking boots to explore what the real America has to offer.

What’s your go-to party trick?
My thumbs are double jointed so I can bend them backwards, does that count? If not then I’m pretty good at reaching high places (because I’m tall).

And finally, cheesy chips?
Do you even have to ask? Of course!
