When did you start working at Whiteoaks?

I started in October 2019

Tell us a bit more about your career progression within Whiteoaks.

I began as a Campaign Executive when I initially joined Whiteoaks, which included responsibilities such as social media monitoring and posting, campaign reporting and content proofing. After almost a year in the role, an opportunity came up to join the content team. I applied for it and was successful! Since September 2020 I’ve written content for a range of our clients across sectors such as retail, broadcast and emerging technologies as a Specialist Content Writer.

How did you get into PR?

Although my work background is primarily in marketing and project coordination after previously completing a marketing-focused business management degree, I’ve always been interested in the media and was impressed by Whiteoaks when applying to work here.

What’s been the highlight of your Whiteoaks career so far?

Probably making the successful switch to Specialist Content Writer. It was a big shift in my day-to-day responsibilities but I’m delighted that I’ve received good feedback internally and from clients on the quality of my written pieces.

What makes you smile at the end of the day?

Knowing that the words I put to paper are being published and read by professionals in a range of sectors.

When I’m not PRing I like to…

Attend football matches and concerts in pre-Covid times, but during the last year watching matches on TV and building my vinyl collection.

How long have you worked at Whiteoaks?

Since October 2017

Tell us a bit more about your career progression within Whiteoaks, for example, your first role and how you’ve developed since then

I joined WO as an Account Manager originally in Team Taurus before progressing to SAM and then becoming an Account Director to head up the then newly formed Team Indus in 2019. Since then I have developed to Associate Director with support from the management team and now oversee two of WO’s account streams, Team Indus and Team Ara.

How did you get into PR? For example, what did you study? Your previous jobs, etc.

I’m definitely a creative and much better with words than I ever was with numbers! So when looking at university degrees the PR course at Bournemouth stood out to me for its mix of media relations and writing and communication skills – it was also one of the most highly regarded courses for this subject in the country. The best part of this course was the placement year where I was lucky enough to do my time with the PR team at McLaren Automotive (proud daughter moment with a dad who is massively into his cars and F1) which massively boosted my interest in PR and gave me the opportunity to work with some fantastic peers all around the world. The majority of my career remained in automotive PR when I worked at a boutique PR agency which boasted clients like Volvo and Peugeot which also dipped my toe into B2B PR which encouraged me to make the transition to B2B tech and led me to where I am today.

What’s been the highlight of your Whiteoaks career so far?

Working with our broadcast clients I’ve been lucky enough to travel to both the NAB (Las Vegas) and IBC (Amsterdam) shows for two years running. While the locations are glamorous and fun, there’s nothing more rewarding than hosting 50+ successful journo briefings with the clients in attendance and seeing the coverage results continue to come in weeks and months later.

What makes you smile at the end of the day?

No matter how long you’ve been in PR – seeing a great piece of client coverage come through still makes me smile given the team effort it takes to get there, from the account team to bridging the subject with the client, to the media team selling in the idea and content crafting the final piece.

When I’m not PRing I like to…

Workout! Usually you’ll find me doing CrossFit, running, swimming, walking or yoga (but not all at once…)

How long have you worked at Whiteoaks?

I joined Whiteoaks in July 2018 & have just celebrated passing the 3-year milestone!

Tell us a bit more about your career progression within Whiteoaks, for example, your first role and how you’ve developed since then:

I joined Whiteoaks as a Junior Account Executive back in 2018 but unlike most candidates going into this entry level role today, I had graduated almost a decade prior to starting and already had 7-8 years’ experience as a retail manager under my belt.

It was a little scary to say the least, leaving a management position and starting again but pursuing a career in PR had been a long-term goal of mine so I jumped at the opportunity.

I remember my first week so clearly and being completely in awe of my new surroundings. I met the team, navigated my inbox, and celebrated the success of making it to Friday with a glass of prosecco in hand at the company’s happy hour! It was a completely new environment for me, but I loved it!

A year on, I was promoted to Account Executive which meant my role involved working more closely with the media – something I knew I would enjoy. I remember my first big win involved securing an intro lunch briefing for one of our clients with a journalist at the Guardian and it was at that moment I thought tailoring my skills to focus solely on a media specialist role was something I wanted to do long term.

To help me establish my path within media outside of the day-to-day role, I took advantage Whiteoaks training opportunities such as completing my PCRA CPD accreditation, attending lunchtime pizza training sessions and signing up for webinars.

Three years on and I sit proudly in the position of Senior Media Account Executive for Team Ara.

How did you get into PR? For example, what did you study? Your previous jobs, etc.

PR was a career I always wanted to break into but graduating during the 2012 recession made it a challenge as most opportunities were based in London. However, where possible, I took advantage of internships working within brands such as Whistles and Women’s Health Magazine to get insight and expand on my industry knowledge.

What’s been the highlight of your Whiteoaks career so far?

I think for me the biggest highlight has been achieving consistently great results for clients in response to my efforts. It’s more an ongoing highlight rather than one in particular but as many do say – consistency is key!

What makes you smile at the end of the day?

Ticking everything off my to do list and closing my laptop!

When I’m not PRing I like to…

Go to Pilates, go out for dinner, walk the dog, catch up with friends, indulge in a Netflix series, travel… the list goes on!

How long have you worked at Whiteoaks?

A year and a half – I’ve worked longer at Whiteoaks from my home office than I have from the Hook office!

Tell us a bit more about your career progression within Whiteoaks?

I joined Whiteoaks in October 2019 as an Account Manager and I have just been promoted to Account Director, which is exciting and feels like the natural next step for me. I’ve really appreciated the mentoring and support from my line manager and more senior peers during my time here, and there’s definitely always something new for me to take on and challenge myself with.

How did you get into PR? For example, what did you study? Your previous jobs, etc.

I studied PR at Leeds Beckett University. Despite it being located pretty much at the opposite end of the country, I chose the course as they placed equal emphasis on time spent in lectures and getting real-word experience. That was important to me then and looking back it was definitely the right choice to prioritise getting that experience in. As part of my four-year course I spent a year working in the John Lewis press office as an assistant press and events officer, which was a really varied role encompassing working on press shows for over 400 journalists one minute and exclusive fashion previews for editors the next. I also spent time carrying out work experience with a variety of different organisations, from The National Trust to the Maritime & Coastguard Agency, as well as several different agencies. This helped me to realise that I loved the buzz of agency life, and so when I left university I went straight to working in a boutique B2C agency, specialising in luxury goods and technology. I had a brilliant four years there working on some household name brands and delivering some really cool events with the likes of Rafa Nadal and Cindy Crawford, but I got to the point where I was ready for a new challenge, which brought me to Whiteoaks!

What’s been the highlight of your Whiteoaks career so far?

Rather than one highlight, it’s been a case of lots of little wins. I’ve been lucky to work with some fantastic clients from all over the world, and it’s been fascinating to learn a little bit more about some of the crucial technology that runs in the background of our day to day lives.

What makes you smile at the end of the day?

Some great feedback from a client that I can share with the wider team – always a nice feeling if everyone can end the day with a smile on their face.

When I’m not PRing I like to…

The pandemic and subsequent restrictions have made me realise that my hobbies largely revolve around going out for food with friends… but in the absence of being able to do so, I love anything outdoorsy, like going for runs, long walks, gardening. I’m lucky enough to live equidistance to some beautiful beaches and the South Downs, so we’re really spoilt for choice at the weekends when it comes to getting outside.
